In the middle of the Arizona real estate downturn, the Authority was asked to approve financing to construct the America West Arena, home of the Phoenix Suns. At the time, the project was considered risky and had been previously turned down by at least one other lender. The project was approved and helped to revive downtown Phoenix while serving as one of the premiere basketball venues in the world.
